Book Galore

Last Saturday, instead of watching the latest Harry Potter movie which truly sucks (you can find my review here, please be noted that it’s full of spoilers) I decided to finish Mitch Albom’s latest book, For One More Day, which I have started to read last year. It took me months to finish reading it because the first part was really boring to me.

If I just didn’t miss reading so badly and school was not hell to me, I wouldn’t be able to finish it until now. The book was great (except for the first part). I liked it, it’s one of my favorites. For One More Day is about Chick Benetto’s experience. In the book, he tried to commit suicide, but instead, to his astonishment, he saw his mother… her mother’s ghost. (Yes, Mitch’s latest book has a touch of death again) According to the author, this story of Chick is true. I don’t know if I would believe it, what I know was that I was touched with Chick’s story. The last part was really saddening. Okay, no more spoilers.

Yesterday, when I got back home from a tiring day at school, my father asked me if I wanted to go to the mall. Though my prelim exams started today, I decided to go with them without thinking twice. As usual, I went to the local bookstore. The first book that I have seen was “Chinese Cinderella” by Adeline Yen Mah. I’ve seen it years ago but I wasn’t really interested with it because the book looked so plain. Months ago, I’ve read, if I’m not mistaken, in Kathrin’s blog that it was a good book. Since then, I’ve been wanting to get a copy of my own, but it was only yesterday that I have seen a copy of it again, and so, I bought it.

And now, despite that I sat my very hard 30-item PolSci prelim exam this morning, and I will take my English and CF exams tomorrow afternoon, I have already finished reading the 200 plus paged book. I can’t believe it, I’ve already finished reading it in only a day (I might as well go to the store where I bought it and demand to replace it with another book. Lol). I suppose I just really missed reading, that I can’t stop reading.

Chinese Cinderella is the story of the author herself, an unwanted daughter who struggled throughout the years while she was under the guidance of her stepmother and father who even forgot her name and the date of her birth. She was a very studious girl, desperate to be noticed and loved by her father. And in the end, she proved not only to her self, but to her father, stepmother, and siblings as well that she can reach her dream even though there are so many hurdles in her life. Now, she is a writer and physician.

Her story was really captivating, it would have surpassed the standards of Maalala mo Kaya1 and Magpakaylanman2in choosing the stories of people that they want to dramatize and be broad casted nationwide. It’s really a good read. [EDIT] You can read a full review of this book in It’s my Choice. [/EDIT]

Ah, three more days and I can have the last Harry Potter book in my hands. I can hardly wait! My father told me that we’ll go to Manila on Saturday, and I guess I’ll get my copy there. Unfortunately for me, there had been some changes in the schedule of our prelims, we’ll sit our exams in our major subjects next week, but that does not mean that I will not read Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows on Saturday and Sunday. I may not be able to finish it this weekend, but I’ll make sure that I will be able to read at least half of it before Monday.

And before I’ll look for something else to do (I still haven’t reviewed yet for my exams tomorrow, I guess I’ll go early to school tomorrow and stay all morning in the comforts of the library) I want to say that I really hate the only decent local bookstore in our place. As what I have written in an entry here in my blog, it’s not really a bookstore because it also sells other things like school supplies, toys, and during the Christmas Season, Christmas Trees. And now, they’ve put signs that says “No Private Reading.” No wonder why almost all of the fiction books that they sell are covered with plastic. That’s totally insane! How am I and even the other customers would know if we like the author’s style of writing and the story is good (even just the first part of the book, the synopsis usually found at the back of the book is not enough and sometimes, quite misleading)? That’s why I don’t want to buy Mark Haddon’s latest book, “A Spot of Bother,” though it’s in their bestseller list and I know the author. I want to read its first two or three pages first. Luckily, we will go to Manila this weekend. There, I can find a real bookstore that only sells nothing but books and does not prohibiting “private reading.” I might as well add “A Spot of Bother” on my book list.

Any other books that you can recommend to me? Btw, I’ve provided a list of the books that I’ve already read.

PS: I want to share to you this photo that I took during our excursion last Sunday with my family to the place where a piece of land that turned into a fish pond owned by my grandmother.

Boat Alone

That was the boat that we used to get to that place.

Library Encounter

This morning, we were asked to go to the library and look for a thesis (written in Tagalog) for our Filipino subject. As the main library building (where the Filipiniana section is located) is about ten minutes away by foot from where we were, we (I and my blockmates) decided to go to the CBA library where we usually go during breaks to review for Chemistry only to find out that we needed to go to the main library. Isn’t that annoying?

So I and my blockmates entered the thesis-slash-dissertation room to look for what we were supposed to look for. A few minutes had passed, and I was able to look for a thesis written in Tagalog. Nice. And here comes the librarian, she said “Ay, hindi kayo puwede diyan.1” I don’t know the real reason why but we obeyed her. I suppose those theses and dissertations are for the graduate students. She said that the theses that we were looking are at the Filipiniana section.

After an exhausting journey with four flights of stairs to climb, we found out that there were only four theses written in our vernacular. Wow. I was not expecting that our library has only that number of theses written in Tagalog intended for the use of undergrad students like us.

Aside from the internet services (which I abuse), an excellent place to study, newspapers that are replenished everyday, and a computerized system of the books that our library has, I can’t think of any other services of our library that I frequently use. I don’t borrow books every now and then.

Whenever I review for Zoology and Chemistry, I can’t help but go to the newspaper stand to read the current events. And whenever I feel so bored from reviewing, I go to the internet room and surf the internet. Lol. As I have said, I abuse it. Lol. Actually, tomorrow, I’m planning yet again to abuse it as I have two hours for break. Isn’t that great? Lol. What I don’t like is that the browser that we use at school is IE which I really abhor.

Back in high school, I thought that I could borrow more excellent reads as universities have bigger libraries. I was wrong, a simple search of the books that I want to read in the catalog of the library would yield you a zero result. What they only have are the known books of today, like Harry Potter and Dan Brown’s, or those books that were published decades ago that have stinking smell. Well, I suppose, I’ll just buy those books that I want to read.

According to my friend, even though our school have tons of books, it’s not reliable, because most of the times, the library would fail you. I simply agree. Last February, we needed to research something about divorce for our debate in Filipino. There were a few books that discussed that topic, but it was not the data the we needed. Or was it we were only lazy to read? Haha. I ended up with Wikipedia’s own article about divorce. I suppose, the next time we need to research, I’ll just surf the internet. Haha.

And as I’m blogging about our library, I’m currently reading a boring and a very philosophical book called “Sophie’s World” by Jostein Gaarder for a book review that I need. And I still have not finished reading “Youngblood 2.0″ and there are books that I’ve already bought but have not the time to read them yet.

Oh, do you know a public library near San Fernando, Pampanga? I want to visit one.

PS: I’ve almost forgot to tell you that I have a new hostee by the name of Jhed. Visit his site, won’t you? And to anyone who wishes to be hosted here, please don’t be afraid to ask me, I don’t bite. Just be sure to read the rules.

Headline

Yesterday, I was in school. I got there around 8:30am and I found out that I had to wait for seven long hours for the person I had to see — don’t ask me who I had to see and what I want from him or her. Basically, it was a bad day for me.

I don’t like to go back home as I had to meet that person that I’m talking about. At first, I wasn’t doing anything. I was just there, sitting and looking at the looong line of students who were enrolling. I even had to resist myself from surfing the internet as it would cost me some money and I had only limited amount of funds yesterday. And it really sucks that I was not bringing a book to read yesterday.

Good thing the library was open. No, I did not read books there as there are no interesting books in our library. What I did was read the newspapers there. There were lots of stacks of the PDI that were not archived yet. I did not read everything as it’s not a good idea for reading outdated news. I only read the Super and 2bu sections and the column Youngblood (I was also looking for the column Highblood but I only found one) of the PDI. I had a great time reading them. Very interesting subjects. Much interesting than those blogs that sprouted like mushroom from nowhere lately (but not all).

And I think reading this kind of stuff would surely make me inspired!

Here are some articles that I suggest: The ghost (very hilarious), Jeepneys and Airplanes (can relate this one) and Remembrance of things past (and this one too).

Oh, I originally read this news in the PDI about the bulge. It really made me laugh for hours (until now)! [EDIT] And for those people who are taking NSTP you might also like to read this one. [/EDIT]

Have you already experienced asking yourself “Hey! Where did I read that?” after remembering a quote or a line from the things that you’ve read? Well, I usually experience this. It really racks my brain whenever I ask myself that question, and most of the times, that question remains unanswered.

Does that means I’m getting older? Lol! Yeah, I think so. I’ll celebrate my birthday next month which coincides with Talamasca’s birthday. And that reminds me that Christmas is just around the corner. Please, stop shortcutting the word Christmas into X-mas or xmas… when did the letter X start to represent the word “christ”. This ain’t Math! And oh, don’t start calling me Xian! Lol!

Room of requirements

Got inspired of Tammy’s latest entry…

The Room of Requirements is a room in Harry Potter’s world where it can turn into any room — cupboard, rest room, bedroom, name it!

I can say that the Room of Requirements is just like our library in my previous school: it can be the perfect place to study, do some research about your project, read the bestselling books written by various authors, know the latest issues in our society or talk with your friends, know the latest hearsays around the school, make it a studio and take your pictures here and there and it can even be a good place to do some practice for a play, or even play Scrablle and Chess!

Every time we had to go to the library (the whole class) to do some research about something, we rush to the library. We don’t even care if we’re on a line! Once we’re there we get all the books (that has something to do with our topic) that we can. We don’t even care if we get the same titles. After which we start to skim the pages of the stinking old books. Alas, we only get little information that’s why we end up copying each other’s work. There are some computers with internet access that are available but we don’t use them because we don’t want to spend money. Haha.

During my second to the last year in that school, our library was the superb place to know the latest rumors circulating the campus because there were vandalisms in the carrels. There were rumors written in the carrels that some teachers in our school are um, well, I don’t want to tell it which I believe is true and two freshmen students who made a miracle (in Tagalog, himala, I don’t know if you’ll get this). It’s really funny that these kinds of rumors were circulating in our school during my stay there.

Some of my classmates go to the library during our break times (recess and lunch time, both thirty minutes each) not to borrow a book — and not also to eat — but to abuse the resources, I mean, it’s a good place to stay because it has air-conditioning units. And due to their boredom they made our library a studio. Yes, they were taking pictures (and even videos) using their camera phones. Good thing, the librarians did not notice them doing so.

It was also used as a dressing room during a large presentation in our school. I even coincidentally went there during that day when our small library turned into a dressing room. The actors and actresses were doing their finishing touches and everybody was rushing.

It was also the same room used by the Peer Counselors Club during their meeting. And speaking of this club, the officers of the Peer Counselors Club were the ones who put the library back into its original state when a book hunt contest was held there during the book week celebration. I was neither an officer nor a member anymore at that time but since all of the officers of the said club were my classmates I decided to help them. What a big mess!

I’ll miss our library. The library that can turn to any room that you like…

A walk to forget

Last two days ago, I borrowed “A Walk to Remember” by Nicholas Sparks in our library. It’s the first Nicholas Sparks book I ever read. Well, I still have not finished it yet but I’ll try to finish it this day. I’m already on page 217. And after 217 pages… there are only few things that happened, actually, you can count them! Yeah, I’m already on the part of the book where Jamie is dying. It’s so sad, thinking that this is the first fiction tragedy book that I ever read and Landon really love her. I like the book but the only thing that I don’t like is that the transition of events are very very slow! And it’s not in full detail. With 23 pages left I don’t think so there will be more things that will happen to Landon, and one more thing, the font size is big. The next book I’ll read is “The Notebook” by Nicholas Sparks.

Some of our test papers were already handed back. I’m so happy that I’m the highest in Math, English and Music. Lol. I did not expected to be the highest in Music. Health is okay… one mistake. TLE is good. Physics is good… If I’m not mistaken I’m the fourth one with the highest score. Filipino is not so good but not bad. But I totally sucked at Social Studies. I got a low score but it’s not a failing one.

During our finals which is a month from now, we will don’t have written exams (in most subjects). We’ll have a play in English, a sort of a film for Social Studies, catering in TLE. Well, I forgot the others. This mean that we will spend lots of money and time for these. I think I should go on hiatus by mid-February.

Oh, USTET results will be released this Saturday. I’m keeping my fingers crossed!

I was watching American Idol just a while ago. Dunno if it’s the latest season because It’s my first time to watch it. Yeah, you heard me right… my first time. I’m not a big fan of it. So there is this girl who tried for an audition. Her name is Rhonetta (I’m not sure) and do you know what she did? She only sang to lines of some stupid crap of song. Lol. She expected to be in. Sorry! She even cursed the the judges! Pardon… bye!

I think it’s raining all day because of Rhonetta. Lol. Joke. There’s a storm here in the Philippines. Just this morning… when I was about to take a bath. There was a power interruption! Wahh! So I took a bath with a candle. Lol. Yeah… it’s funny but do I have a choice? And oh, I was to conserve water by that time…
