Win a Domain!

This contest will run from today, February 07 to March 141 in celebration of Asteeg.Net’s third anniversary. The contest is open to all bloggers who do not currently have a paid domain, has at least 20 entries (excluding sponsored posts), and has been blogging for six months or more. Please take note that I’m only giving one paid domain (.com, .net, .org, and .info only) and no hosting package is included. The domain is only good for one year.

To enter this contest, here are the things that you have do.

  • Write an entry on your blog about anything. You can write whatever you want as long as it is entertaining. Entries in Tagalog and English are accepted. The entry should have at least 1000 words excluding the words that you’ll use for the note (please refer to the next item).
  • On the beginning of your blog post, include a note that that is your entry for this contest. Please link to this page (http://asteeg.net/2008/win-a-domain/) so that others will know about this contest.
  • Only one entry per blogger.
  • Drop a message in my e-mail, christian[at]asteeg[dot]net, regarding this contest. Please include your name, your blog URL, the permanent link of the blog post which serves as your entry for this contest, and your desired domain name2.

I’m the one who will judge the entries. The most entertaining entry will win this contest. The winner will be contacted by e-mail sometime in the latter part of next month. The winner will bag a domain name which will be registered under my name and after six months, if the winner deserves it, it would be transfered under the name of the winner. The domain should only be used for blogging purposes and nothing else.

Please take note that the domain is only good for a year. After that time is exhausted and the winner still likes the domain, he or she has to renew it.

The rules can be changed, so be sure to check this post frequently.

UPDATE: I know that it’s not yet the 14th, but I now close this contest. We don’t have any winner. As a matter of fact, I received no entries to this contest. Apparently, no one joined this contest and I didn’t expect that.

  1. Depending on the turn out of the participants, this could be extended. []
  2. The domain name will be subjected for my approval and be sure that it’s not taken yet. []

10 Years from Now

Today is the third anniversary of the blog that you are currently viewing. Yes, Asteeg.Net is three years old. I renewed my site last month through bank deposit1. As of now, I’m not thinking if I would migrate to a new domain. And I guess, I would not dare to leave this site again2. This site has been my home in the Internet for three years and it has been a part of my life. So why buy a new one?

I was in the church this afternoon to hear mass when a question suddenly popped in my head… What would become of us in the next ten years? I almost laughed hard in public when I thought of that. I was glad that I didn’t. Just imagine what will the people in the church would think about me. As you all know, I’m a Harry Potter fan and one of the things that I realized in reading the series about death is that the unknown is what we fear, and not death itself. But in this case, the unknown makes me excited.

I can’t help but imagine that some of us would be married by 2018, and maybe, we would have our own children at that time. And for those who have already their own children, they would be old enough to have their own blogs. I can’t wait to see Neil to be successful in life. Would the Filipinos dominate the blogosphere? Would Yohan, the son of Ms. Rachel will have his own blog? Is there going to be a new term for blogs? When would I be able to join the TriNoma Blogger Food Tour? Lol! Would I be able to meet those bloggers that I admire? When would I be able to use my real name here again? Would we know the real identity of Dan Hellbound? When would my effing style in writing change? Would Asteeg.Net still exist 10 years from now? And the seven million jackpot question… Would we still be updating our blogs by that time?

These questions are currently boggling me. I want to know the answers to these questions, but of course, we would not be able to know them until the right time would come. I’m sure, even Ma*Damn Tusha3 and her electronic tarot cards would not be able to predict what is in store for us in the coming years. And besides, if we would know them at this point, the future will be spoiled and the element of excitement would not be there.

Of course, the future can wait. What we have to do now is to enjoy the present and let our past lead us to the future.

Abangan na lang natin ang mga susunod na kabanata (Let’s just wait for the next chapters.).

*Raises glass for Asteeg.Net*

PS: I’m still thinking if I would have my own contest and give the winner a domain as a prize. I’ll just keep you all updated!

  1. I was wearing my school uniform on that day and the teller could not believe that I am a second year college student. She thought that I was only a high school student. Actually she asked me about three times if I’m a college student. []
  2. I almost lost this site last year. I moved to a new domain but I was enlightened that this domain is where I should stay. []
  3. She’s a fictional character that I and some of my friends have created back in our high school days. []

Get Frustrated

As I write this, I’m sitting on a chair on the fifth floor of one of the buildings in school with my energetic and noisy classmates, and at least eight instructors in our room. My blockmates are waiting for their turn to perform a certain activity in front of one of our professors and as I am already done and passed with flying colors in our activity, I decided to write this.

Actually, I don’t know what will I write. I guess, I’ll just let my mighty 0.5 mechanical pencil lead my hand. You see, thoughts and ideas are overflowing in my mind and I don’t know which topic I would expound. More than that, ideas would sprout from nowhere like wild mushrooms at the most inconvenient time (e.g. while you are shopping at the mall), and when I get the chance to put my thoughts into writings, I’ve already forgotten them. My ideas are as if they were place inside a top hat and a magician transfigured them into a rabbit or a bouquet of roses.

Currently, I have two articles marked as drafts here in my blog (one of which is my original essay that my professor had marked with “Lifted Article?”). The other one is my own account of one of the most tragic events in my life which still needs further revisions. Besides, I’m waiting for the right time to publish them.

As I’m writing about blog entries, I may also write something about my LiveJournal account. It has become stagnant — mosquitoes started to treat it as their abode — and the entries that I posted there were just excerpts of my entries here. I guess, I’ll revamp it and make it as my private blog. I have so many things that I want to write and publish in the Internet but are not intended for the whole public to read. But I always forget or get lazy to revamp my LJ whenever I get the chance to do it. My other blogs has entered hibernation as well and I don’t know when I’ll be able to update them. I’m also planning to open again a photoblog but I’m not sure if I’ll be able to maintain it. This is the main reason why I hate maintaining multiple blogs. I cannot maintain them due to my busy schedule. But of course, this blog is updated more often than my other blogs.

Well, I guess, I’ll end this entry so I can draft my review of one of the books that I have recently read as I still have loads of free time.

Note: This was originally written two days ago. Today, I have successfully revamped my LJ account. I will also post my review of Marti Leimbach’s “Daniel Isn’t Talking” later or tomorrow.

2007 in 7 Lists of 7

It’s been my tradition here in my blog to post a yearend entry (2005, 2006). I usually post the most memorable things that happened to me from the very first day of January until December in my year ender specials, and in 2006, I’ve also included a list of my favorite entries for the whole year. But this year, I decided to make seven lists of seven. The lists talk about the best of 2007 except for the news category. I’ve also added notes here and there, and some are potential spoilers so be warned!

Most of the things that I have listed below are in either chronological or alphabetical order.

Books

This year, I was able to read 15 books, almost twice than last year. I really had fun reading this year.

  • Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows — JK Rowling: The ending of Harry Potter’s epic tale was really fantastic. JK ended it with a fitting finale. How I wish there is a sequel to this book, but then, the time has come to end this very fascinating story.
  • The Kite Runner — Khaled Hosseini: I like this book very much. Furthermore, this is the best book I have read in my entire life. Unlike other fiction reads, this book is realistic. I recommend this to all, but most especially to those people who are not hooked into books and to Afghan refugees.
  • A Thousand Splendid Suns — Khaled Hosseini
  • The Chinese Cinderella — Adeline Yen Mah: [My Review]
  • Youngblood3 edited by Artura, et al: If you’re into Filipino literature, this is the book that you should buy. Very entertaining. And this is not fiction, by the way. [My Review]
  • The Dogs of Babel — Carolyn Parkhurst: The weirdest book I have ever read. It’s about Paul, a linguist, who tries to teach his dog how to speak. No, not because he’s out of his mind but because he wanted to know the real cause of his wife’s death. The words Parkhurst used in the ending of the story were really strong. [My Review]
  • For One More Day — Mitch Albom: Another tale about death. Yes, it’s a good book, but how I wish Albom would explore other topics. [My Review]

If you have read these books, you would notice that most of them are sad stories, but yeah, the characters lived happily ever after.

Songs

Entries

  • Faulty Schedule: My craziest misadventure this year. In this entry, I wrote how I spent almost 12 hours… in the mall.
  • The Perfect Duo: Chemistry and Zoology: You would fail these two subject if you don’t know how to memorize. And would you believe me that I enjoyed them? Haha.
  • The Divine Subjects: A review of my subjects back in first year, second semester. I used Dante’s concept in his Divine Comedy to give the final verdict for each of my subjects.
  • Stinks and Sells: I particularly enjoyed writing this. It’s my own version of what’s in and what’s out.
  • Big Surprises: The story how I acquired my notebook.
  • Let’s Talk About Grades (Part 2): What I realized in these posts was that grades aren’t everything.
  • Signs and Symptoms of Stress: The title says it all. I had a good time writing this and rereading it makes me laugh. XD

I know that the title of this entry says that for every list, there are seven items. But I have to break that because I reckon I have more interesting entries this year. And so we continue…

Web Apps

  • Last.fm: A cool way to discover music.
  • Google Reader: This one is a bit old, it’s been out since like two years ago. But it deserves a spot here.
  • Twitter: Who doesn’t love Twittering, eh? It’s enjoyable even though there is a maximum of 140 characters per tweet.
  • Sxipper: This one is actually a Firefox plugin. It can automatically input your information in every single form. It can also remember and generate passwords for you. A similar service is Clipperz.com.
  • del.icio.us
  • Flickr
  • Google Apps: Sign up and get your @yourdomain.com mail. All of the essential features of GMail are included. There are also other available applications that you can use.

News

Unlike the other categories, this one does not talk about the bests of 2007. These are the breaking news here in the Philippines. Majority of these are bad news.

  • Bus Hostage
  • The Glorietta 2 Blast: What’s the latest developement? Have they solved this?
  • Mariannete Ampere’s Suicide: A very very sad story
  • Erap’s Pardon: No way!
  • House of Representatives Bombing
  • The Peninsula Hotel Siege: Trillanes, please spare the hotels. Lol.
  • Peso’s Increasing Value: How come we cannot feel it?

Bloggers

I had fun reading your blogs! Keep on writing interesting blog entries!

WordPress Plugins

Yes, I know, most of things/persons that I have listed above (Especially in books, songs, web apps, and bloggers) were not published/released or didn’t start blogging this year. But then, this is my blog. Haha.

Well, I suppose, this is my last entry for this year. May everyone have a prosperous 2008! Rock on!

Yaya, What’s for Lunch?

From what I remember, we had more or less ten yayas1 since the 90’s. Some were irritating, lazy as hell, and irritating. Oh, have I said that they’re irritating? While others were friendly and they do their work as how they should do it.

The first maid that we’ve got, as far as I can remember was an old woman from Leyte. We had her for more than ten years. She did what she ought to do: clean the house, take care of us, prepare food, etcetera. But as time passed by, she became irritating and very slow. Talking about of “depreciation.” A whole day is not enough for her to finish ironing our clothes or wash them. She fought verbally with my parents when she don’t like whatever she had to do.

I’m not sure of the reason why she left. But from what I’ve heard from my parents, the wife of her son died and she had to take care of his son — who is by the way blind — and her two grandchildren. Now, she’s getting very low pension from SSS.

From the time she left and when we got our present maid, we had several maids. All were irritating!

I’ve listed here some of the things that made me irritated:

  • One of them loves to cook at the wrong time so we end up eating cold food for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
  • Another one let strangers inside the house. Won’t that freak you out? 8O
  • Most of them clean the house a few minutes before my parents would arrive.
  • My clothes always get mixed with those of my siblings. I always end up looking for my clothes.
  • One had met the other maids in the neighborhood. They always talk whenever they get the chance.

The present maid that we got — who is on leave for a week — is the most industrious among the maids that we’ve got over the years. According to my mother, she is the best. She does whatever my parents told her. Actually, before she left for Bacolod yesterday, she washed all of our dirty clothes. And to my siblings, she’s not just a maid but also a friend.

But even though we’ve got a maid that do almost everything of the household chores, my mother still insist that we do some chores. Yeah, she’s right. We should. Why? It’s for our own good, when we got older, I’m sure we will also be doing those household chores, like it or not.

And this reminds me that I still haven’t got to clean my room since the start of the summer vacation. I badly need to clean my room!

*****

I’m 50% sure that I’ll attend the iblog3. What I’m thinking now is how I’ll get back home from UP. My friend who goes to UP said to me that I can go back to SM North Edsa, but that means that I’ll have to wait for a bus and that could take for ages. He suggested that I can go to Cubao and look for the bus that’ll go to Bataan there.

  1. Translation: maids []
