Uneducated Animals

I don’t know if there is a direct translation of the work maniglo (a Kapampangan word) in English and/or Filipino. Nevertheless, to give you an idea what the term maniglo is, here is an example: when you parents gave you a present that you always use, brag about and bring with you wherever you go, then you are officially maniglo.

Can’t get it? Let’s have a fans’ day for another example. It’s not complete without the usual people bringing streamers and posters of Judy Ann Santos, Sam Milby, Sharon Cuneta and the like. These people shout as if there is no tomorrow, throw their hands up in the air so as to get the attention of their idol, and will do everything just to get their idol’s autograph. All of these people are maniglo.

No, this post has nothing to do with the fan’s day. What I’m going to type here has something to do with the upcoming May polls — Elections!

Last Tuesday, Mutineer Navy Lieutenant Antonio Trillanes IV filed his candidacy for senator. I was able to catch this news over the tube. And while watching it, I almost burst into laughters. Why?

Trillanes, who along with 28 other junior officers and two enlisted men is facing coup dÂ’etat charges for staging a shortlived mutiny in July 27, 2003, was mobbed by Comelec employees and supporters as he moved from office to office, signing autographs and posing for photos.

The women, in particular, shrieked like schoolgirls, as some grabbed Trillanes by his neck to peck on his cheek.

I was never aware that the employees of the Comelec are those people that we call maniglo. From the video that I saw, I can say most of the employees of the Comelec were all standing — and stopped working — just to see Trillanes file his candidacy. There were even some who harassed (kissed and hugged) him. And I never expected that he has multitude of fans! So now, I will not be surprised that he’ll get his own sit at the senate. Isn’t very ironic? Just imagine a mutineer-turned-into-senator in the current administration!

On related news, tonight, I saw a news regarding former Senator Loren Legarda, Tarlac Representative Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III (accompanied by ex-president Cory Aquino, Kris Aquino and James Yap), former Senator Gregorio “Gringo” Honasan and Congressman Francis “Chiz” Escudero receiving a “standing ovation” from the employees of the Comelec.

And now, the Comelec reminded its employees not to ogle or mob the candidates.

Pardon me for saying this but I believe they’re hypocrites (the employees). I’m sure, they taught their children how to act properly in public, and now, they’re acting as if they’re animals from the zoo! They’re not even to suppose to ogle the candidates, worse, in public!

People! Watch your attitude! Behave properly!

  1. Oh, you know Filipinos. Always get starstruck whenever there are celebrities. :D

  2. that’s really funny! I havent seen the video about this Trillanes “scoop” yet and Im meaning to see it! hahaha… Though I heard “reports” that Trillanes is a very gorgeous (and handsome?) lad… never had the chance to validate it though.. am so tired watching tv after my long day at work :(

  3. Ate Ems: Lol. I suppose many people think he is gorgeous (and handsome?) as they would surely not ogle him if he’s not. Lol.

  4. Gosh I need to know more about Philippine Politics, but the problem is that, I’ve just really lost interest already. There’s too much controversy and celebrities are turning into Politicians. Baah.

  5. That’s why I totally agree with Ronald Reagan:

“Politics is supposed to be the second oldest profession. I have come to realize that it bears a very close resemblance to the first.”

    Ditto, ditto, ditto.

  6. tingin starstruck lang sila, di nila alam tunay na pagkatao as long as sikat sa paningin nila eh nakiki-usi. usisero, hehehe yan ang isa sa mga katangian ng mga noypi.
