From Dial-up to DSL
During the turn of the millennium, I had my first taste of internet. I don’t really care if my internet connection is slow, as long as I can view sites with reasonable amount of time, it’s fine with me. I don’t care if some of my classmates are enjoying the super fast DSL while I’m on dial-up, scratching the protective coating on the internet cards that I buy every week and waiting for a long time just to connect to the internet.
To me, the slow connection is still bearable. As I’ve wrote, as long as the websites that I visit load with reasonable amount of time, it’s fine with me. I’m not somebody who would go for the faster one if I can tolerate the slower one.
The biggest downside of being on a dial-up connection is that you can’t use the phone. You can’t create an outbound call nor nobody can call you if you’re connected to the internet. For the past years, this really makes my parents irritated. Especially when family relatives from the USA are calling here at our home but can’t connect because I’m busy surfing the internet.
I’ve been a pain in the ass. Yeah. Whatever.
*****
Late last month, I’ve seen an advertisement of PLDT’s newest DSL service in the newspaper. It’s the Plan 888. I’ve told my dad1 about it. I’m just glad that he agreed. I’ve told my dad about it not because I want a faster internet connection but because I don’t want to be a pain in the ass anymore. He called the effing customer service of PLDT and the customer service representative said that their line man will go to our place within the week. A week has passed and we haven’t received any news from PLDT about our application. So my father decided to ring PLDT again. Whoever spoke to my father don’t know the services that they offer. That person told my father that the Plan 888 isn’t available here in Pampanga yet. How come their advertisements clearly state that it’s already available here and there is even a big billboard of their newest product here? Don’t you call this stupidity?
I decided to forget about it. I thought that PLDT made a big mistake. Two weeks ago, I was surprised when somebody from PLDT called here at our home, asking me if they can install the device that they’re giving so I can start using DSL.
When they went here in our house, they found out that my computer still doesn’t have a LAN card. Curse my old computer for that. Two Sundays ago, I’ve bought LAN card. I let the sales man in the store where I bought it install it at the back of my CPU because I’m too scared to do that work. When I got back to our house, it looked like my computer can’t find the newly installed LAN card. And that’s when I started to troubleshoot my computer alone. Since then, I’ve opened my CPU numerous times just to find out what seems to be the problem.
Monday last week, I had my first taste of DSL here at home. I was online the whole day. But when night came, the DSL connection we have doesn’t like to work. It continued to be like that for about three days. So I was forced to dial 173 (PLDT’s effing customer service) and I found out that our application was not yet activated by that time!
Last Saturday, miraculously, our DSL connection came to life once again. Dunno if our application was already activated. But until now, I’m enjoying it.
And because of this, I can now enjoy and abuse YouTube (which is now owned by Google). Any short films that you want to recommend? And look at this! This is so cool. The newly released international trailer of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, and hey, mind you, it’s not just the teaser trailer.

that’s why we have two phone lines, because we used to be on dial up.
my classmate is also having problems with the PLDT DSL, hanggang ngayon wala parin! siguro more than a month na. laging nangangakong sa susunod na araw ulet, pero wala parin.

Inggit mode.
I’m still on dial-up, so yeah.. inggit ako. Haha! Hooray for you! I’m planning to sign up for SmartBro next, next week.
April 23, 2007 @ 3:39 pm
Aww wow god for you. I had my DSL/Broadband connection last December. My mom was forced to use it because my aunts came home last december 11 I think. Now I’m enjoying my oh so fast internet connection so far. Hindi pa naman siya nagkakaproblema. Smart Bro has a good internet service. I THINK. hahahaha
Enjoy the DSL!
April 23, 2007 @ 9:42 pm
Good for you!
Now you can download lots and lots of pr0n under lightning speed condition!!!
April 23, 2007 @ 9:44 pm
aaahhh! the sweet flair of DSL! Watching videos over youtube and downloading torrent files! hehehe. bad! bad!
PLDT DSL sucks! AND I REALLY MEAN IT!

April 24, 2007 @ 9:40 am
WTF?! I hate PLDT!!!!! Err.. Kaya hindi na ko umaasa. Kaasar!
Taga Pampanga ka pala? San dun? I have relatives in Angeles City. Hehe.
April 24, 2007 @ 10:42 am
naku, nakakairita ang dial up connection. noong andoon pa ako sa bulacan eh dial up lang ako pero nung dito na sa manila, nag-smart bro kami since may promo naman. nakakaenjoy talaga kasi sobrang bilis nya at mas tipid kung adik ka maginternet. haha. kasi pang one day lang at sakin ang 100 php prepaid load pag dial up haha.. nilink nga pala kita.. link ex?
April 24, 2007 @ 2:13 pm
PLDT/SmartBro. If you read the reviews, laging may angal sa kanila. Either it’s because of the intermittent connection, or the very very very poor customer service.
Nung Sunday, I was with family sa SM North EDSA. My father finally considered the DSL thingie pero sa BayanTel. The only problem is that he wouldn’t agree to split the bill. Hindi naman rant against my parents. Rant lang na I’m officially envious of people whose parents agree to pay for things like this. Sighs.

But I’m not sure, baka makihati kami kay kuya DInong..he’s offering it
Huhuhu
April 24, 2007 @ 4:41 pm
Congrats. and happy surfing with your new DSL connection! I must agree with shari though, that PLDT/SmartBro’s customer service really pisses me off and makes me want to curse (but I don’t).
April 24, 2007 @ 6:27 pm
At last! I was able to visit your site again (Sorry for not visiting for the last weeks!)!
Well, I never really experienced dial-up so I really don’t know the difference. But with DSL, sometimes, it’s effing annoying if the connection’s busted (That happens, really).
Enjoy the DSL!
April 25, 2007 @ 6:05 pm
Haha.
April 26, 2007 @ 9:00 am
Argh! I hate PLDT! It’s even worse than SMART Wi-Fi!
April 26, 2007 @ 11:28 pm
I didn’t know that dial up connections are not good in the Philippines
. Dial-ups here aren’t as bad there. The only thing is that no one can call your landline number when you’re on the internet. That’s why my Mum changed to broadband a few years back cos we’re always on the internet so no one was able to contact us. Lmao
! Is there an AOL company in the Philippines? They’re quite good with internet connections.
I love HP! I can’t wait for the next movie
.
April 27, 2007 @ 2:49 am
Feels good to have DSL right? You get to do a lot of stuff and have more fun. The last time I used dial-up was when we moved to our apartment and the DSL line wasn’t activated yet.
April 27, 2007 @ 3:21 am
nice.
now you can contribute much better into piracy..tons of movies (which ranges from ya know to porn) and stuff.
i remember my dial-up days. it was a pain in the a** waiting forever.
April 27, 2007 @ 7:43 am
you finally graduated in dial-up connection, marami pa magagawa sa dsl like downloading, faster streaming, atbp. congrats at naka DSL ka na rin.
April 28, 2007 @ 9:25 am
ayee.. ako i dont care at all LOL. kung mabgal man o hindi.. bsta nkkOL ako if not then dsl nlng pra always online heheehe
April 28, 2007 @ 2:17 pm
I’m still waiting and waiting for the dsl service to come here in my
belovedhometown. I’m still using dial-up and I’m very much disappointed with their new vibe+pwede internet card (the “forever reloadable” one) and yes, I’m still a pain in the ass… and it sucks bigtimeApril 28, 2007 @ 11:09 pm
That’s nice that you’ve got DSL now. It is funny that dial up still exist though.
April 29, 2007 @ 11:02 pm
Kainggit ka naman! I inquired about that service last month. Turns out wala na daw available port sa area namin so hindi kami pwedeng magsubscribe. Darn.
April 30, 2007 @ 9:15 am
that’s cool though,. since you’ll not be a pain in the ass now, and i know you’ll be addicted to watching a lot of vids in youtube sooner or later. ^__^ teehee. so anyway, ayun, have fun with DSL!
April 30, 2007 @ 10:06 am
isnt it great to be on DSL? you can DL stuff, like even watch a video in YouTube without waiting half day? haha..we have naman the Plan 999.
love the HP trailer! a friend of mine emailed me naman the MS Word copy of HP 7 book. have to start asap haha ang haba sobra..:)
April 30, 2007 @ 2:46 pm
Jenny, you’ve been duped! That MS Word copy sure is fake!
May 12, 2007 @ 12:06 am
Glad to know you’re now on DSL. Hope you’ll enjoy the faster connection.
May 20, 2007 @ 11:24 pm
